The Alzheimer's Association recently updated its 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease to help people distinguish normal signs of aging versus signs of possible dementia.
These 10 signs promote early detection, diagnosis and intervention in patients suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, as well as other related forms of dementia. Early detection, diagnosis and intervention are vital because they provide the best opportunities for treatment, support and planning for the future.
The revised list describes the following signs:
- Memory changes that disrupt daily life.
- Challenges in planning or solving problems.
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks.
- Confusion with time or place.
- Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships.
- New problems with words in speaking or writing.
- Misplacing things or losing the ability to retrace steps.
- Decreased or poor judgment.
- Withdrawal from work or social activities.
- Changes in mood and personality.
